Karl Sun Karl Sun has built his career at the intersection of technology, law, and entrepreneurship, driven by the belief that the most impactful innovations are rooted in the strength and culture of the teams that build them. Throughout his journey, he has focused on scaling organizations that foster collaborative excellence and empower individuals.

Karl began his professional life in law, moving from a startup firm to the Silicon Valley office of Perkins Coie before transitioning to Google to establish its patent department. After building the company’s global IP portfolio through its IPO, he launched Google’s first office in China and later joined Google.org to lead investments in renewable energy technologies, merging his technical background with a commitment to social and environmental impact.

As co-founder and former CEO of Lucid Software, Karl scaled the company from a startup into a global leader in visual collaboration, now serving over 100 million users while being consistently recognized as a “Best Workplace.” Karl also advises technology startups and research groups, helping them navigate the path from laboratory innovation to commercial success.

Karl holds a BS and MS in EECS and an MS in Technology and Policy from MIT, and a JD from Harvard. He serves on the boards of SSP International and the Utah chapter of The Nature Conservancy.

Karl and his wife, Lisa, live in Utah and are the proud parents of three Stanford students. They are joined at DCI by their maltipoo, who is eagerly anticipating her own introduction to The Farm.
