Former Professor and Biostatistician
La Mesa, CA

Kathleen HuntsmanWith over 35 years of expertise in biostatistics, data sciences and public health, Jimmy Hwang has built a career at the intersection of data-driven inquiry and human well-being. Jimmy received his PhD and MS from University of Delaware. A pioneer in academic computing and a Fulbright Senior Scholar, most recently a professor and Principal Biostatistician at UC San Francisco, his work has spanned global research in HIV/AIDS and oncology.

As a DCI Fellow, Jimmy is transitioning from high-velocity leadership to a season of purposeful reflection and creative renewal. His “Purpose Pathway” focuses on Asia-Pacific studies and the fine arts, with a goal of producing a collection of oil paintings that translate a life of data into visual narrative.

Central to his fellowship is his “Legacy House” project: the conceptual design of a unique, four-story multi-purpose building on a family-owned plot. He aims to blend sustainable architecture with his scholarly interests to create a “lasting and legendary” structure—inspired by traditional Japanese aesthetics and vertical Zen architecture— that serves as a family sanctuary and a cultural gift to the community.

Having started running marathons in his 50s and swimming competitively in his 60s, Jimmy continues to run 40 miles and swim 5 miles each week. Jimmy has since run 69 marathons including the Boston Marathon as a qualifier. He brings the same patience and resilience to this new chapter, seeking a peaceful alignment of family legacy, intellectual curiosity, and artistic expression.
