Strategy Advisor; Former Investment Banker
Hong Kong SAR, China
Ian Mombru has spent the past 30 years working in strategy and M&A, largely in cross-border settings. His experience spans a wide range of industries and geographies, including a significant period helping media businesses navigate digital disruption. For the last 15 years he has been based in Hong Kong, working with Western companies as they expand across Asia, with particular experience in China, India, Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines.
He began his career at McKinsey in the United States, later working across Europe and Asia, before moving into investment banking with Lazard in London and then China. He originally trained as an engineer, earning an undergraduate degree in Aerospace Engineering in the UK, followed by a Master’s in Engineering-Economic Systems at Stanford, and later an MBA from INSEAD in France, where he also met his wife, Sichin.
Ian was born in Spain, grew up in the US and UK, and his family now straddles three continents. Sichin is passionate about education and works closely with Asian families navigating the UK school and university system. Their son is currently at Wharton, and their daughter will soon graduate from Cambridge. Both are accomplished musicians – a trait they didn’t inherit from their dad.
Outside of work, Ian enjoys exploring Hong Kong’s hiking trails and continuing to improve his Mandarin. He is looking forward to returning to Stanford, 35 years after last studying there, and to experiencing “the Farm” again from a very different point in life.
