Jonathan GreenbergJonathan Greenberg co-founded and directs the USF Institute for Nonviolence and Social Justice in 2019 with Dr. Clarence B. Jones, the former lawyer, strategic advisor, and draft speechwriter for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. At USF, Jonathan has led initiatives in nonviolence education, community-engaged research on violence and nonviolence, interfaith dialogue, and math literacy for all, in partnership with grassroots human service organizations and religious leaders throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, nationally and internationally.

Previously, Jonathan taught negotiation, conflict resolution, diplomacy and international law at Stanford Law School for 30 years. Jonathan also served on the faculty of Stanford’s Program in Public Policy, as Scholar in Residence at the Gould Center for Conflict Resolution, and as affiliated faculty of Stanford’s centers for African and Latin American studies.

Jonathan’s interdisciplinary scholarship investigates communal conflict, restorative justice, international law and human rights, environmental and indigenous history, and interfaith dialogue. He regularly writes essays for the Fierce Urgency blog. His play Casualties was produced at Theaterworks.

Jonathan formerly served as associate counsel to the Canadian law firm Heenan Blaikie LLP, where he directed the firm’s International Dispute Resolution practice; as Senior Advisor to the President of the Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands; and as board member of Step Up on Second a community-based organization providing permanent supportive housing for chronically homeless adults with mental illness.

Jonathan enjoys painting as a creative process, and walking with friends in the hills above Stanford. His grown-up sons are both artists/designers in the San Francisco Bay Area.
