Former CEO
San Francisco and Ladera, CA
Maya Altman is proud of her more than three decades in public service. Maya led the Health Plan of San Mateo (HPSM), a local public and government-sponsored Medicaid Managed Care Health Plan, for nearly 17 years. Before that, she worked in local government – in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties – largely focused on health care.
At HPSM, Maya initiated several innovative programs to improve the lives and health of lower-income adults, families, and children: helping adults living in nursing homes find housing and move back into their communities; improving services for the families of children with severe illnesses or disabilities; and enhancing the quality of life, as well as the health experiences of individuals eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid. Governor Newsom appointed Maya to the Stakeholder Advisory Committee for his Master Plan for Aging. Maya has also been active in many other state and federal health policy forums. She serves on the boards of two non-profit health and social service organizations in San Francisco.
Maya earned her BA in Political Science at Bryn Mawr College and received a Master of Public Policy Degree from the Goldman School of Public Policy at UC. Berkeley. She also participated in a non-degree graduate program in Israel.
Maya grew up in San Francisco and Palo Alto. While she spent several years on the East Coast, she now lives in the Bay Area, splitting her time between San Francisco and Ladera, a community near Stanford University.
