Tim Steinert has over 30 years of experience as an international lawyer and manager working in greater China. He was the General Counsel and Secretary of Alibaba Group Holding Limited from 2007-2020 and a member of the Alibaba Partnership. He remains an honorary advisor of Alibaba. Before joining Alibaba, Tim was a partner at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in Hong Kong from 1999-2007. He began his career in corporate law as an associate at Coudert Brothers in Beijing, San Francisco and New York from 1989-1994, followed by a similar five-year position in Davis Polk & Wardwell’s New York and Hong Kong offices.
Tim serves on the boards of trustees of St. Paul’s School (Concord, N.H.) and Princeton in Asia, on the Columbia University Global President’s Council and on the advisory board of the Yale School of Music. He previously served on the Listed Company Advisory Board of the New York Stock Exchange, the Takeovers and Mergers Panel of the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission and the Singapore Infocom Media Development Authority Artificial Intelligence Governance Advisory Council. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the National Committee on United States-China Relations and the Hong Kong Academy of Finance.
Tim and his wife Lixia Zhang and two teenage children call Hong Kong their home. Tim is fluent in Mandarin Chinese. He loves to travel, read, cook and collect art.
