Education Director, Klingenstein Fellow, Former Management Consultant
New York, NY
Tom Merrick was a director at Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School in New York City. Tom was engaged in the education sector for 15 years. He is also a former high school AP math and science teacher.
Before transitioning to education, Tom was an Associate Partner for PricewaterhouseCoopers and IBM, leading numerous teams for a variety of Fortune 500 clients. In that capacity, he developed many project management abilities, fostered team building excellence, created financial plans and budgets, and designed and implemented large scale systems. Perhaps most importantly, Tom worked with people across multiple industries and in the context of many business functions, building strong and lasting relationships. While he found the leadership aspect of the role gratifying, the context of the corporate environment was ultimately unfulfilling.
Fortunately, Tom found that deep fulfillment he was looking for in education. In connecting with students and feeding their intellectual passions, inspiring teachers to illustrate how much they love their field, and ultimately leading the charge of presenting that passion to prospective families as teacher, administrator, and leading admissions, he played a significant role in shaping the school’s vision for education.
Tom has an MA in Private School Leadership from the Klingenstein Institute at Columbia University as well as a BS in Operations Research and Information Engineering from Cornell University. He lives with his wife and three children in New York City. In his free time, you will find Tom exploring the beaches of Sag Harbor, NY with his family and friends.
