Dr. Lonnie Shumsky is a physician who has spent her career as a clinician educator, first at the University of Utah and then at the University of Washington-Boise site. She has taught and mentored medical students and residents for the past 25 years, serving as the Clerkship Director for Internal Medicine, as well as playing a major role in residency curriculum design. Another important focus has been her involvement in faculty development, where she has spent time teaching her medical peers innovative ways to interact with their trainees in order to improve their knowledge retention.
Lonnie grew up near New York City, the daughter of an artist and a psychologist. She graduated from Wesleyan University with a double major in Dance and Biology, and then attended UCLA for medical school.
Lonnie has been deeply involved in her community in support of environmental, educational, and arts initiatives. She has served on the Board of Directors for three dance companies; Trey McIntyre Project, Ballet Idaho, and now, LED, an exciting contemporary company based in the Pacific Northwest. Lonnie is married to Kevin Shea, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at Stanford. Her daughter is a research assistant at UNC Chapel Hill and her son is an undergraduate at Stanford. Her family enjoys hiking, skiing, and kayaking. She also, of course, loves to attend dance performances of all kinds.
