Herb Riband has had a diverse 31-year international career with leadership roles in biotechnology, medical technology, consumer goods, consulting and law. He has built and led healthcare policy, government affairs, market access, strategic philanthropy, corporate communications and law functions for the international operations of multinational enterprises.

Since 2012 Herb has worked for Amgen, the California-based world leader in biotechnology. His most recent position was vice president international policy & government affairs, based in Switzerland, leading the company’s work in these areas across all regions outside of the United States. He also spent five years leading Amgen’s European market access, pricing and health economics activities, supporting the company’s entire portfolio of innovative medicines. In 2014, Herb co-led the launch of Amgen’s Value Based Health Care program in Europe, which develops innovative “beyond the drug” healthcare delivery solutions and promotes healthcare policies focused on measuring and improving patient outcomes.

Previously Herb spent 13 years based in Switzerland with Medtronic in a variety of international leadership roles, including vice president of external affairs. In this capacity Herb led innovative programs to accelerate patient access to appropriate therapies, and was responsible for government affairs, healthcare policy and corporate philanthropy activities outside of the United States. Prior to Medtronic Herb worked for Diageo plc, Ernst & Young and Baker & McKenzie.

A native of Philadelphia, Herb received degrees from Cornell University and the University of Michigan Law School. He has served on the boards of the Medtronic Foundation and various industry associations. Herb is a citizen of the United States and Switzerland. He is married to Jeanine Thomas Riband, a native of Lima, Peru. They are proud parents of two adult children who live and work in New York and San Francisco.
