HumeGeorge Hume has been the Chairman of Basic American Foods since 1986. Before joining Basic, George spent three years with McKinsey & Company, an international management consulting firm. In 1979, he joined Basic and was elected a member of the board in 1980.

George is currently involved in volunteer activities at the San Francisco Opera and at Stanford University’s Cantor Arts Center and Stanford Live. Previously, he served as president of the San Francisco Opera Association, Trustee of Stanford University, and Trustee of the San Francisco Day School. He was one of the three co-chairs of the Committee to Restore the San Francisco Opera House, and the president of the Golden Gate Park Music Concourse, an extensive fundraising campaign to build an underground garage in Golden Gate Park.

George received his BS in Political Science and Economics from Yale University in 1969 and a JD/MBA from Stanford University in 1975. In his spare time, he enjoys fly fishing, hiking, skiing, and collecting American Indian artwork, modern painting, and English antique furniture. George and his wife, Leslie, reside in San Francisco.
